Kiteboarding 101 Course Description
This intensive 9-hour course administered over 3-days will turn anyone into a safe and confident kiteboarder. Students will progress through the following 4 stages at a pace that will be determined by the instructor based on the student’s confidence and ability levels. At the end of the lessons, the student receives an IKO certification, an IKO handbook, and a YK T-shirt. Waiver of liability and use of safety equipment required.
Trainer Kites - The key to kiteboarding is flying kites and this lesson is designed to teach students how. By spending a bit of extra time in the beginning getting kite skills dialed with a trainer foil, students will save themselves much struggling once its time to hit the water. (Typically between 15-30 min)
Power Kites - Feel the power of leading edge inflatable kites. Students will learn proper setup, terminology, and wind theory necessary for a successful adventure in the water. Skills learned include assisted launching and landing, safety systems and de-powering the kite, water relaunching, and self-rescue.
Power Strokes and Upwind Body Drag - Get those feet out of the sand and fly through the water downwind. Power strokes teach the student to really feel and control the power of the kite in the same way they will when it comes time to put it all together and start kiteboarding. Upwind body dragging is a necessary skill students will use throughout their entire kiteboarding career. It teaches students to recover lost ground after being pulled downwind. Upwind body dragging is necessary for recovery whenever the rider becomes separated from the board.
Board Starts - The moment everyone has been waiting for! Students will learn to hold the kite with one hand and get the board on their feet. Perform power strokes and learn board skills or put those skills from other sports to good use and feel the joy of sailing across the top of the water. Before completion of Kiteboarding 101, all students will learn basic kite care, tuning of the bar and lines, and the rules of the road.
